The five most common signs your home needs better insulation are: rising energy bills, uneven room temperatures, drafts near walls and windows, ice dams on your roof, and a home built before 1980. Most homeowners don't realize their insulation is underperforming until they start noticing these symptoms. Here's what to look for and what you can do about it.
1. Your Energy Bills Keep Climbing
If your heating and cooling costs have been trending upward without a clear explanation, poor insulation is often the culprit. When insulation deteriorates or was installed insufficiently, your HVAC system has to work harder to maintain a comfortable temperature. Compare your bills year-over-year — a steady increase is a red flag worth investigating.
2. Some Rooms Are Always Too Hot or Too Cold
Uneven temperatures throughout your home are a classic sign of insulation problems. If certain rooms feel drafty in winter or stuffy in summer while the rest of the house is comfortable, the insulation in those areas may be thin, damaged, or missing entirely. Upstairs rooms and rooms above garages are common trouble spots.
3. You Can Feel Drafts Near Walls and Windows
Hold your hand near exterior walls, windows, and electrical outlets on cold days. If you feel cold air coming through, it means outside air is getting in — and your heated air is escaping. While weatherstripping helps with windows and doors, persistent drafts along walls usually point to an insulation issue that air sealing and blown-in insulation can fix.
4. Ice Dams Form on Your Roof in Winter
Ice dams — those thick ridges of ice that build up along your roof's edge — are caused by heat escaping through a poorly insulated attic. The warm air melts snow on the upper portions of the roof, and the water refreezes when it reaches the colder eaves. Beyond being a sign of energy waste, ice dams can cause serious water damage to your roof and walls.
5. Your Home Was Built Before 1980
Building codes and insulation standards have improved dramatically over the decades. Homes built before 1980 were typically insulated to much lower standards than what we use today — and in some cases, walls and attics were barely insulated at all. If your home is more than 40 years old and hasn't had insulation upgraded, there's a good chance it's underperforming.
What You Can Do About It
The good news is that insulation upgrades are one of the most cost-effective home improvements you can make. Blown-in insulation can be added to existing walls and attics without major renovation work, and air sealing addresses those draft points where outside air sneaks in. Many homeowners see noticeable improvements in comfort and energy bills within the first season.
If your home qualifies for the Home Weatherization Assistance Program (HWAP), you may even be eligible for free insulation and air sealing services through your county.
